Chapter 17

I became filled with happiness as the alarm clock sounded and signaled that Thursday had arrived and that the three sick days I took off work were over.

I got up quickly and knew exactly what I wanted to eat for breakfast. Something I saved for special occasions only. I was so excited, I went into the kitchen before I even brushed my teeth, and looked around.

My father always said that if I wanted to see all the good that I had in my life, I needed to endure some challenges and difficulties in the mix. He used to say that to me while preparing our festive breakfast, and I'd sit and listen to him as if it was the first time as he’d tell me a particular story, even though I heard that same story countless times before.

My gaze turned from one side of the kitchen to the other. I mapped the stage on which I was about to perform, noted the list of groceries in my head, and nodded as my plan of action was signed and final.

While still in my pajamas, I poured some oil into a deep frying pan and turned the stove on under it. Waiting for it to heat up, I ground tomatoes, some garlic, one red pepper, and half a spicy green pepper in the food processor. I then used a wooden spoon to even that mixture in the sizzling pan and hurried into the bathroom.

As the smell of that sauce started to take over my apartment, I washed my face in cold water and stared at the sparkle I so liked to see in the corner of my eyes through the mirror. It was a spark that was reserved only for those moments when my father would prepare a farmer's eggs in tomato sauce breakfast for me.

I brushed my teeth, showered swiftly, applied some light makeup, and picked what I was going to wear for my return to the office, all along replaying the memory of my father telling me his regular story in my head.
